Overview
Martin Creed
"Talking about work is work. Thinking is work. Words are work. Words are things, shapes…things are everywhere…work is a fight against loneliness, against low self esteem, against depression, and against staying in bed…Work is everything, I think. Everything is work. Everything that involves energy, mental or physical. So... everything, apart from being dead. Living..." (Work # 470, Martin Creed, 2005)

Martin Creed’s vocabulary of forms draws on a diversity of materials which often come from ordinary everyday life.  He concerns himself with the production and notion of “things” and with the phenomenon of work and its processes.

Creed uses, among other things, paper, music, light and texts for the making of his systematic series of works, all of them untitled.  His pieces balance subversive humour with seriousness and formal elegance.  No matter what “material” they are made of, they are all part of a numbered system of works and thus defy categorization into traditional art genres.  For the exhibition at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery, Martin Creed will be working with pianos, lifts, furniture and music.
