Rafał Bujnowski, Józef Robakowski
Rafał Bujnowski belongs to a group of young Polish painters led by Wilhelm Sasnal, one of the shooting stars of today's art scene. Convinced that art is as essential to life as basic foodstuffs, Bujnowski wants to make it accessible to everyone with small formats and moderate prices. He attaches great importance to technical perfection – at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, Bujnowski trained intensively in the techniques of painting and graphic art, which he now masters with virtuosity. Bujnowski's themes spring from modern everyday life, and his approach is conceptual.
Józef Robakowski is an old master of the Polish art scene. He founded the ‘Zero-61’ group in Toruń and took part in DOCUMENTA 6 in 1977. Until now, Robakowski was primarily known as a video artist, and as such he also appeared at the DANCE Festival in Munich in 2002. Here he is represented with paintings for the first time.
The initial spark for the Energetic Angles series, realised in various media, was a visit to a Gothic cathedral: Józef Robakowski felt as if the stained-glass windows were shattering under the impact of the light; their energy-charged geometric construction inspired Robakowski to experiment with the liberating power of movement and light energy. The jagged lines of his paintings appear electrified, on the verge of discharging into the room. Against the political backdrop of Poland, Robakowski's art can be read as an act of liberation; in terms of art history, it follows in the tradition of kinetic light objects.
