“Down Deep. Living seas, living bodies” is a group exhibition and research project exploring humanity’s deep connection to the ocean. Presented at the State Art Gallery in Sopot with the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) and the University of Gdańsk, it reflects on the idea of “becoming ocean” — returning the human body and mind to the larger living system from which life emerged.
Drawing on science, philosophy, Indigenous knowledge, and art, the exhibition views the ocean not as environment but as a sentient, self-regulating organism. It challenges human-centered thinking and invites us to imagine new ways of existing in relation to the sea. Multimedia conceptual artist Goshka Macuga, who’s practice is based on historical and archival research and who’s work is inherently interdisciplinary, is present in the exhibition with her 3D tapestry “Who Gave Us the Sponge to Erase the Horizon?”.
