In “Étretat, par-delà les falaises. Courbet, Monet, Matisse,” the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon is hosting an exhibition dedicated to depictions of Étretat, Normandy, which have achieved iconic status over time. On display are key works by Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet, and Henri Matisse, which demonstrate the special role the place played in the development of new visual languages in the 19th century. The historical focus is complemented by drawings, photographs, and archival materials that trace Étretat as a mythical landscape. Contemporary photographer Elger Esser is also represented in the exhibition with works that build a bridge to today's artistic engagement with the place. After closing its doors in Lyon, the exhibition will travel to Städel Museum, Frankfurt.
