Since antiquity, the faithful and highly detailed depiction of nature has been one of the central concerns of painting. In the art of the 20th century, no movement pursued this dialogue with reality as programmatically as American Photorealism. In
response to Abstract Expressionism, artists such as Richard Estes, Audrey Flack, Ralph Goings, and Ron Kleemann turned toward a form of figurative painting that sought to rival photography in both precision and visual impact. Featuring more than 90 selected masterpieces, the exhibition traces the development of this movement—also known as Hyperrealism—from the 1960s to the present day. It also includes works by the contemporary painter Karin Kneffel, whose paintings compellingly extend the tradition of the photorealist gaze.
